How can we help?

Quick answers about tracking, costs, pricing, and privacy. Short how-to videos are on the way for each of these.

Getting started

How do I start tracking my drives?

Open the app and add your vehicle — pick the year, make, and model and we fill in its real MPG automatically. Then tap Start when you pull out, or turn on automatic detection so every drive records itself. There is no account to create and nothing to sign up for.

Do I have to press start every time?

On Android, no — turn on automatic drive detection in Settings and LiveGasCost records your trips on its own in the background, even with your phone in your pocket. On iPhone you tap Start and Stop for now; automatic detection needs a different piece of iOS plumbing and lands in a later build.

Which phones does it work on?

iPhone and Android — everything above works on both, with one exception noted in the previous answer: automatic drive detection is Android-only for now. Your drives live on that phone either way — there is no web login and no sync, because there is no account behind them.

Gas price & costs

Where does the gas price come from?

The official EIA average for your area, refreshed weekly — that is how often the government publishes it. It is an area average, not the pump you used, so if you know your exact price, type it in and every drive is costed from that instead.

How is my cost per drive calculated?

Your vehicle's real MPG and the current gas price: (miles ÷ MPG) × price per gallon. That's the number you watch climb live.

What is the idle cost?

The part of the drive you spent sitting still — drive-thrus, pickup lines, warm-ups — counted separately, so you can see what waiting actually costs you.

Do I have to keep re-downloading the app for new prices?

No. Prices refresh on their own, once a week, because that is how often the EIA publishes them. There is a refresh button in Settings if you want to pull the latest right now — it will tell you when it last updated, or say so plainly if it could not reach the EIA.

Pricing

What does it cost?

Two one-time purchases, when it reaches the app stores — and neither one renews. Ninety-nine cents unlocks the live gas counter for good: the live cost, automatic detection, every drive saved and priced. $8.99, once, unlocks the full app on top of it — the garage, fill-ups and learned MPG, summaries, export. The beta running now is free, and anyone who bought the 99¢ unlock before the two tiers existed keeps the full app free, permanently.

Why is the beta free?

Because it's a beta. Testers on it today have every feature at no cost while we're testing. The prices start when the app reaches the stores; nothing is charged in the meantime and nothing expires on anyone mid-test.

How do I get the beta?

Not yet — nobody new is being added to either platform's beta right now. Leave your email on the get-the-app page and we'll tell you the moment you can.

Is there a free version?

Not permanently. The live gauge is what the app is for, so it's what the 99¢ buys once we launch — from your very first drive rather than after a trial. The beta was the free window, while it was open.

Do I need an account to buy it?

No. Each unlock is a normal one-time purchase through your phone's app store, tied to your store account — not to a LiveGasCost account, because there isn't one.

Privacy & your data

Is my location data private?

Yes. Your drives are stored on your phone and never reach us — there is no server of ours holding a copy. We never sell your location, and we never route it through a big-tech ad platform. One honest exception: if you use iCloud Backup or Android backup, your phone may include LiveGasCost's data the way it does every other app's. That copy sits in your own Apple or Google account, we have no access to it, and you can exclude the app in your phone's backup settings.

Do you have an account for me?

No. There's no sign-up, no email, and no password. We can't lose or leak what we never asked you for.

Can I delete my data?

Yes — delete a trip in the app and it's gone from your phone, which is the only copy there was. Deleting the app removes every drive with it.

Still stuck?

We're a small team and we read every message.
